| Hi, I would just like everyone to know that I am a Monopoly Tycoon. I kicked ass at that game last night. Awesome. Also, I would like to point out that Repo! The Genetic Opera was amazing. Also, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Love, Becky | | |
| Hi,
The weasel governor has been arrested!!! Let us all celebrate! It's like an early Christmas present to us from the FBI!
I'm excited. I've been waiting for this to happen for years. All you had to do was look at his weasel face to know that he actually was a weasel. Good times.
Ciao,
Becky

| Hey there.
So today I've been getting all stressed out about careers again. I don't know what triggered it. I mean, I was thinking about the fact that I should really get an internship this summer, but it's really hard to pick a good internship when you don't actually know what you want to do with your life. I mean, I have a few vague ideas. It's just that I feel that there are many things I would like to do, and in which I could probably succeed. I think. Here is a list, and my thoughts.
1.) Foreign Service Officer - I really think that this career sounds interesting. I would work in a foreign embassy, hopefully in the "political" aspect of things. I've researched it, and there are five career paths to choose from, and I think the political one sounds like it would be best for me. I would specialize in the foreign situation in whatever country I was stationed, and then I would advise U.S. officials when they came to the country. I think it sounds like it would be fascinating, but there are a few downsides. a.) You don't get to choose the country in which you work--which, in another way, could be kind of exciting. b.) If you ever wanted to have an actual life, like with a family, you'd have to quite and get another job. c.) This is probably something I'd want to get into while still young, like immediately after I graduated. However, this could pose problems in regards to grad school. Assuming I need grad school. I probably should go to grad school. Ugh.
2.) Professional Travel blogger/dispatch writer - Ok, I don't actually know if this is a career. But what I've discovered is that I greatly enjoy writing in my travel blog. I've actually been considering--really just thinking about it, I have no idea if it will actually materialize--writing a book about my travels in Rome and Beijing based on my blog entries. I mean, I know I'd have to do alot more editing, but still... I think it would be great if I worked for some newspaper or magazine, and they sent me to places to live for a while, and I just wrote travel dispatches about those places, either online or in the newspaper. It's been done in the past--Margaret Fuller was a famous travel dispatch writer. She lived in Italy during the risorgiamento. I don't know if people would want that now, though.
3.) Dramaturg - I don't actually know if I could do this, because I haven't taken a class in it, and I checked and Loyola doesn't offer one, so it's not like I could slip it in my senior year. But here's what I do know: I love theater, I've had some performing experience which helps me understand some of the technical aspects of theater (not in great detail, but still), and the performing experience has also helped me to achieve a greater understanding of what people look for in a play, I'm an EXCELLENT researcher, I've done some drama analysis in my Shakespeare class (but I'm sure I could read up more on the subject, and Loyola does offer a class in script analysis), I'm good at synthesizing information, and I always have strong editorial opinions about the plays I see. I know that a dramaturg in no way directs the play, but as far as I understand it they do offer some opinions about how the audience might see certain scenes before the play opens, so that changes can be made. I don't know. I have a sneaking suspicion that I'd be pretty damn good at it.
4.) Editor - I haven't had any editorial experience, but this is another one where I think I could do it if I tried. I know that I'm good at editing things other people have written, especially when it comes to grammar. However, I think I would also be good at lending a critical eye to other people's pieces of work, and working with them to make it better. From what I've read about this job, you don't necessarily need any sort of graduate degree to do it, although it helps. Oftentimes you just get a job in a publishing house and work your way up to the position. However, it apparently has very low pay most of the time. I don't know how much of a problem that is. I suspect that with my interests, I'll end up living in a cardboard box no matter what I choose to do.
5.) Owner of a place where people learn - Yes, I realize this is vague. This is sort of a utopian job fantasy that I've had, at least since high school. I think it would be fun to open some sort of bookstore/cafe, or maybe just some sort of community center, where people can come to discuss books (fiction, non-fiction, etc.), politics, films, philosophy, history, where children could be tutored, where we could offer writing workshops, maybe organize community theater of some sort and have open mic nights. Basically a place where people can educate themselves and expand their minds in an informal setting. However, I'm not sure that I would have the business savvy to do this. God knows I'm not good with numbers, and I suspect there would be alot of legal trickiness to this. But it would be fun.
Yeah...I think I would like/be good at these things. But I'm not really sure I'm qualified to do any of them. Oh, I also think museum curating might be fun, but apparently you have to know alot more science than I do. You have to be able to supervise restorations and all that. There are masters programs in curatorial sciences, though. ::sigh:: Anyway...it's just all so confusing. I just feel like I should know by now what I want to do. It should all come together. And picking one feels like a trap. I wish it were easier. I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on this subject, if you would be willing to comment. Maybe you can think of something for me to do that I haven't thought of, or maybe you think I would suck at one of these things, and that might help me narrow it down.
Anyway, it's 1 a.m. I should probably go to bed. Class tomorrow. Unless Evers cancels again. If he cancels again, I will be mad. That will be his SIXTH cancellation this semester. Why bother paying for the class if he's never there? Right. Anyway. Bed.
Ciao
Becky
